Abstract

This work introduces a non-invasive ultrasonic method for accurate piston position measurement in high-pressure hydraulic cylinders. By analyzing time-of-flight shifts using externally mounted transducers, it enables precise tracking without coming into contact with the pressurized fluid. This prevents sealing issues, minimizes contamination risks, and reduces maintenance effort. The method achieves sub-millimeter accuracy over an 80 mm stroke. Experiments confirm its robustness and industrial applicability.
