Abstract

Headspace monitoring is a promising strategy for fermentation control, with ammonia representing a key fermentation marker. In this work, MOS sensor characterization for headspace measurement of aqueous ammonia solutions (pH > 10) was carried out using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) coupled with a sensor array. All four sensors exhibited a power law response to ammonia concentration, with one (SGP40, Sensirion) achieving a limit of detection below 1 ppm. These results establish a foundation for the characterisation of MOS sensor for fermentation processes.
