Abstract

Driven by a clear industrial need for advanced inspection equipment for (small) permanent magnets, such as the high-quality magnets used in sensor applications, we present a new magnetic measurement technology, called the Magnetic Field Camera or ‘MagCam’, a powerful and unique measurement platform for fast and accurate live inspection of both uniaxial and multipole permanent magnets. Its applications include automated magnet quality control as well as development of magnets and magnetic systems.

The MagCam technology is based on high resolution high speed 2D mapping of the magnetic field distribution, using a patented chip with an integrated 2D array of over 16000 microscopic Hall sensors. A complete MagCam map of 13mm x 13mm with 0.1mm resolution is captured in less than 1 second, without moving parts.

The measurement data are analyzed using the powerful MagScope data analysis software which uses advanced algorithms to extract unprecedented magnet information from the MagCam measurements, including magnetic asymmetries and inhomogeneities, the full magnetization vector, deviations from a ‘perfect’ magnet, local material defects, angle failures, pole uniformity, distance and angle measurements, the exact magnet position and more. All these quantitative magnet properties can be tested against user-defined quality tolerances for immediate and automated pass/fail analyses, all in real time.

The poster shows various spectacular MagCam measurement and analysis results for different magnet types and applications.
